光绪元宝起源于十九世纪末期风雨飘摇的清朝光绪年间。清末铜价剧涨，民间毁钱为铜，以获数倍之利，市面出现钱荒。广东因停铸制钱，市面制钱日乏，小额流通十分不便。为救钱荒，同时受香港铜元及外币影响，光绪26年6月，两广总督德寿与前总督李鸿章奏准广东率先进行仿香港铜仙铸造机制铜元。故清代机制铜元的铸造由广东伊始。继而福建、江苏、四川等省相继仿铸铜元。以红铜95%、白铅4%、锡1% 配合，每枚重二钱，当制钱十文。
光绪年间清政府统治下的社会受到西方严重冲击，经济、文化等都有受到较大影响，而洋务运动也影响到铸币业。后经由政府决定，由湖北两厂总督张之洞在光绪十三年率先引进英国铸币机器开始铸造银元和铜元。光绪元宝作为大清光绪年流通大面值货币之首，除中央户部以外，地方省所铸铜元皆在其正面上缘镌写省名。

此枚【户部造光绪元宝当制钱二十文】为山东于先生家传之宝，钱币正面有珠圈环绕，圈内“光绪元宝”由上而下而右而左直读，珠圈外铸有“光绪元宝”满文字样，上缘纪地文字为“户部”，下缘纪值文字为“当制钱二十文”六字。背面中央铸“飞龙”图，上缘英文纪地“HUPOO”，下缘英文纪值“20CASH”。中央“巨龙腾空”，自上至左向右环绕一周，龙头置上，两根龙须下垂，鼻梁突起，两眼炯炯有神，龙纹精细，火球在下。其图案圆润凸起，错落有致，有立体雕塑之感。光绪元宝承载着一个时代的社会背景和文化特色，深受历史熏陶，有着极高的收藏价值。此币铜质细腻，呈色亦佳，品相完好，磨损痕迹也是非常自然，为币中珍品。
